Disscussion
In my hypothesis I stated that the egg in corn syrup would shrink and the egg in red water would expand. My hypothesis were correct. I predicted that the egg in corn syrup would shrink because there is less water in the hyper tonic solution then inside the egg so the water would move through the selectively permeable membrane to make equilibrium. I also predicted that the egg in red water would expand because there is more water outside the egg then inside so the water wants to move through the selectively permeable membrane to make equilibrium. We tested putting two egg in different substances. One in a hyper tonic solution and one in a hypo tonic solution. We did this so we could test how osmosis works with different substances. We considered all the variables although we tried to keep them all stable. For example we put the eggs in their different substances at the same time. Same as when we brought them out. Although when we took them out to observe them after being in their substances we took the egg in red water out a little bit before the other. However this was taken into consideration. In this experiment the independent variable was the substance. The dependent variable was the effect on the egg that the substance caused. The control was the egg. I made 2 graphs and one table. The table explains what the eggs looked like before and after being in their solutions. It also explains what the inside of the egg looked like after being in the substance. One of the graphs explains the mass of the two eggs before and after. The other shows the volume of the liquid in the beaker before and after. It shows that the egg in red water expanded because of osmosis and the in corn syrup shrank do to osmosis. This experiment was successful because it gave a really good visual of how osmosis works with different solutions (hyper tonic and hypo tonic solutions). I would change the hyper tonic solution I used. I would like to see what effect other hyper tonic solutions have on the egg.
